Common questions
What is pure merino knitwear?
Pure merino knitwear is made from 100% merino wool, with no possum fur, silk or synthetic fibre. This collection includes Royal Merino's jumpers, cardigans and accessories in 19.5 micron extra fine merino, McDonald New Zealand's undyed newborn pieces, and MyBlanket's supersoft merino baby blankets.
Is merino wool itchy?
Fine merino is generally comfortable against the skin. Itchiness mostly comes from thicker wool fibres, and merino fibres are much finer than standard wool; Royal Merino's 19.5 micron merino sits in the extra fine range. Sensitivity varies from person to person, so if wool usually bothers you, start with a piece worn over another layer.
Can merino be worn year-round?
Yes. Merino is breathable and helps regulate temperature, so lighter pieces work through spring and cooler summer evenings, and heavier knits through winter. Royal Merino's Featherweight range is the lightest option in the collection, with long and short sleeve styles.
What is the difference between pure merino and possum merino?
Pure merino is 100% merino wool, while possum merino blends merino with possum fur and, in most blends, mulberry silk. Possum fur is hollow, so possum merino gives more warmth for its weight. Pure merino is the lighter option and suits layering and milder weather; possum merino suits colder conditions.
Is the merino knitwear made in New Zealand?
Yes. Every piece in this collection is knitted in New Zealand. Royal Merino and McDonald New Zealand make their knitwear in Auckland, and MyBlanket knits its baby blankets in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
