Our Brands

Native Possum is an independent retailer. We stock knitwear from three New Zealand makers, producing seven distinct brands. Between them they cover the full range of natural fibre knitwear — from high-possum luxury blends to vibrant pure merino.

From a small, family-owned workroom in Ōtautahi Christchurch, backed by more than 30 years of experience in knitwear design and manufacturing, and hands-on at every stage from sourcing fibre to the finished piece.

A woman walking along a gravel garden path under brick arches, wearing the Honeycomb Possum Merino Vest in Buff by Woolline belted over a white shirt and sage wide-leg trousers.

Woolline is the maker's own fashion label: a young brand, but not new to knitwear. Rich textures and distinctive silhouettes take their cue from emerging European trends, then are made in New Zealand with care and minimal waste. The blend of 65% fine merino wool, 25% possum down and 10% mulberry silk gives warmth that stays light enough to layer. Because the family is involved at every stage, the collections grow with what customers actually want, while staying true to quality, comfort and considered design.

MyBlanket has been knitting baby blankets in Ōtautahi Christchurch for more than 20 years. Each one is made in-house by an experienced knitwear team in 100% supersoft merino wool, using knitting techniques that reduce waste. Classic textures sit alongside modern designs, all made for first cuddles in the bassinet and pram, and to be kept long after as a family treasure. A considered gift for a newborn, a baby shower or a growing family.

For more than 40 years, Koru Knitwear have been making natural-fibre knitwear in a family-owned workroom in Warkworth, north of Auckland — garments still cut, made, and sewn the traditional way. Their yarn draws on three natural fibres: fine merino wool, brushtail possum fur, and mulberry silk, blended for warmth that stays light enough to wear all day. The colours come straight from Aotearoa — Pacific blues, forest moss, the deep chocolate of native bush — and because all three fibres are renewable and biodegradable, every piece is made to last and made with the land in mind.

A man wearing a brown flat cap, a taupe knit zip-up sweater, and the Tartan Possum Merino Scarf in Mocha/Espresso/Rata by Koru, standing outdoors in front of a rustic wooden fence.

Koru is the maker's signature line — possum merino knitwear with a lofty finish and a distinctly New Zealand character. The blend of 40% possum fur, 50% fine merino wool, and 10% mulberry silk delivers serious warmth without weight, with the softness the fibre combination is known for.

What sets Koru apart in the possum merino space is their use of genuine possum fur trims. Fur-trimmed gloves, beanies, and jackets appear throughout the range — a tactile, distinctive detail no other possum merino brand offers.

Brushtail by Koru is Koru's everyday blend — 75% fine merino wool, 20% possum fur, and 5% mulberry silk. Its signature two-tone plating creates depth and texture across the range, giving each piece visual interest you can see and feel. Lighter and more breathable than the Koru blend, Brushtail suits year-round wear — layered through winter or worn on its own on cooler mornings and evenings.

Trilogy by Koru is Koru's circular-design blend. Offcuts from making the Koru range are collected, sorted, and reprocessed into a new yarn — 65% fine merino wool, 25% possum fur, and 10% silk. Defined by bolder colour and clean styling, it delivers genuine possum merino softness and warmth from fibre that would otherwise go to waste. Made in the same Warkworth workroom, with a lighter, more sustainable story.

McDonald New Zealand stands out in the possum merino space for their approach to colour and pattern. Where most brands offer solids and simple textures, McDonald brings ombré gradients and intricate designs — a genuinely fashion-forward sensibility applied to natural fibre knitwear. Their blend of 35% possum fur, 55% merino wool, and 10% mulberry silk suits their design-led aesthetic well.

Royal Merino crafts knitwear with a single ambition — to make your favourite piece of clothing, and keep it that way. Working exclusively with 100% superfine merino wool at 19.5 micron, no blends and no shortcuts, every piece is made in Aotearoa New Zealand where traditional skills meet innovative modern knitting techniques.

The quality delivers: lightweight, naturally breathable, and temperature-regulating across all seasons, with a soft hand-feel that earns its place year-round. But Royal Merino's real signature is colour — bold, considered palettes that bring genuine personality to classic shapes, making these pieces as easy to build an outfit around as they are to live in every day.

Common questions

What brands does Native Possum sell?

Native Possum sells knitwear from seven New Zealand brands, made by three makers. Koru, Brushtail by Koru and Trilogy are made at a family-run workroom in Warkworth, north of Auckland. McDonald New Zealand and Royal Merino are made in Auckland. Woolline and MyBlanket are made in a family-owned workroom in Ōtautahi Christchurch. All seven brands use natural fibres and are manufactured entirely in New Zealand.

What is the difference between Koru and Trilogy?

Koru and Trilogy are made at the same Warkworth workroom. The difference is the blend — Koru's mainline uses 40% possum fur for maximum warmth, while Trilogy uses 25% possum for a slightly lighter feel. Koru also offers genuine possum fur trim on select gloves, beanies, and jackets — a tactile detail Trilogy does not offer.

What is the difference between McDonald and Royal Merino?

McDonald New Zealand uses a 35% possum, 55% merino, 10% silk blend and is known for fashion-forward colour — ombré gradients, tartan patterns, and bold colourways. Royal Merino is a different proposition entirely: 100% superfine merino with no possum, lightweight, breathable, and focused on vibrant everyday colour. The two brands serve different needs.

What is the difference between Woolline and MyBlanket?

Woolline and MyBlanket come from the same family-owned maker in Ōtautahi Christchurch. Woolline is the maker's possum merino fashion label: a poncho, cape and vest, plus scarves, glovelets and hand warmers, in 65% fine merino wool, 25% possum fur and 10% mulberry silk. MyBlanket has been knitting baby blankets for more than 20 years, in 100% supersoft merino wool.

Which possum merino brand is the warmest?

Koru is the warmest brand in the Native Possum range. The mainline uses 40% possum fur — the highest possum content of any brand on the site — giving the highest warmth-to-weight ratio. McDonald is next at 35% possum, followed by Trilogy and Woolline at 25% and Brushtail at 20%. Royal Merino and MyBlanket are 100% merino with no possum.

Is Native Possum knitwear made in New Zealand?

Yes. Every garment sold by Native Possum is designed and made in New Zealand. Koru and Trilogy are knitted and individually finished at a family-run workroom in Warkworth. McDonald and Royal Merino are manufactured in Auckland, and Woolline and MyBlanket are knitted in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The possum fur and merino wool are both New Zealand-sourced.

Do Koru and Trilogy sell directly to customers?

No. Koru and Trilogy are wholesale-only brands that do not sell direct to consumers. They are distributed through a small number of selected retailers. Native Possum is one of a limited number of authorised online retailers for both brands.
