Blankets & Throws

Blankets and throws knitted in New Zealand from natural fibres, from possum merino throws for the couch and bed to pure merino baby blankets for the bassinet and cot.

The throws blend possum fibre, merino wool and silk for warmth without weight. The possum fibre is collected in New Zealand through conservation pest control and given a second life as knitwear. They drape softly and are made for everyday use, at home or when travelling.

The baby blankets are knitted in 100% supersoft merino wool, in bassinet and cot sizes. Soft and breathable for the early months, they arrive wrapped in tissue in a cotton drawstring bag, and are made to be kept long after.

Common questions

What are the blankets and throws made from?

It depends on the brand. The possum merino throws are knitted in New Zealand from merino wool, possum fur and mulberry silk: Koru uses 50% merino lambswool, 40% possum fur and 10% silk; McDonald New Zealand uses 55% merino wool, 35% possum fur and 10% silk; and Brushtail by Koru uses 75% fine merino wool, 20% possum fur and 5% silk. The baby blankets from MyBlanket and McDonald New Zealand are 100% merino wool.

Which possum merino throw is the warmest?

The Koru throws are the warmest, with 40% possum fur in the blend. The Patterned Possum Merino Throw is knitted double-layer for extra warmth and weight, and the Ribbed Possum Merino Throw is the largest in the range. McDonald New Zealand's throws, at 35% possum fur, come next. Brushtail by Koru's plated throws, at 20% possum fur, are the lightest possum merino option.

What size are the throws?

Sizes vary by style. The Ribbed Possum Merino Throw is the largest at about 140cm x 180cm (55" x 71"), enough to cover the foot of a queen or king bed. Most of the other throws measure between 120cm x 125cm and 150cm x 100cm, which suits a sofa, an armchair or the end of a bed. The Travel Possum Merino Throw is narrower, at 150cm x 72cm. Each product page lists the exact measurements.

Are the baby blankets possum merino?

No. The baby blankets are 100% merino wool, with no possum fur. MyBlanket knits five designs in Ōtautahi Christchurch from supersoft merino, each in a bassinet size of 80cm x 90cm (31" x 35") and a cot size of 90cm x 110cm (35" x 43"). McDonald New Zealand's Merino Baby Wrap is undyed merino from a flock of black merino sheep at Ōtemātātā Station.

Which blanket or throw makes a good gift?

A throw or blanket needs no sizing decision, which makes it a simple gift. For a newborn, the MyBlanket baby blankets arrive wrapped in tissue in a cotton drawstring bag, and the Merino Baby Wrap also comes as part of the Newborn Pēpē Merino Gift Set. For someone who travels, the Travel Possum Merino Throw folds into its own pocket to become a cushion.

Are the blankets and throws made in New Zealand?

Yes. Every blanket and throw in this collection is knitted in New Zealand. Koru and Brushtail by Koru are knitted in Warkworth, McDonald New Zealand in Auckland, and MyBlanket in Ōtautahi Christchurch. The possum fur and merino wool are from New Zealand, while the mulberry silk in the possum merino blends is imported.
