Long White Cloud Possum Merino Scarf

A two-tone scarf lettered along its length with "Land of the Long White Cloud. Aotearoa, N.Z.", finished with a fringe at each end. The lettering is worked into the fabric rather than printed, so it shows on the reverse too, in the opposite colours and reading as a mirror image. Knitted in New Zealand from 55% merino wool, 35% possum fur and 10% mulberry silk, it measures 170cm x 15cm (67" x 6"), narrow enough to wrap twice without bulk.

Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand, usually translated as "land of the long white cloud". In one traditional account, the name comes from Kupe's voyage to these islands, when his wife Kuramārotini saw a long white cloud on the horizon and knew land was near. It first referred to the North Island and has since come to mean the whole country. Wrap it once over a jumper so the lettering runs down the front.

Finish it with the Plain Tubular Possum Merino Hat or the Possum Merino Cheesecutter.

Exact measurements of this garment, laid flat. Allow ±2cm as each piece is knitted.

Hand wash in cold water. Never rub, twist, or wring — gentle squeezing only. Lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct heat. Store folded in a cool, dry place.

New possum merino may shed lightly during the first few wears. This is completely normal and stops quickly. A gentle hand wash helps release any loose surface fibres.
