Kākāpō Possum Merino Childrens Mittens

Children's mittens in forest green with a mustard-gold kākāpō on the back of each hand and three-dimensional wings at the sides. The kākāpō is a flightless, ground-dwelling parrot found only in New Zealand, and one of its rarest birds. Possums compete with kākāpō for food, which is why they were cleared from Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) before it became the kākāpō's main sanctuary. Knitted in New Zealand from 55% merino wool, 35% possum fur and 10% mulberry silk.

One size, for ages 5 to 10 approximately, measuring 16.5cm long and 7.5cm wide (6.5" x 3"). A ribbed cuff holds them at the wrist and tucks under a coat sleeve.

For a farmyard version, see the Sheep Possum Merino Childrens Mittens. Pair either with the Fair Isle Possum Merino Childrens Sweater.

Exact measurements of this garment, laid flat. Allow ±2cm as each piece is knitted.

Hand wash in cold water. Never rub, twist, or wring — gentle squeezing only. Lay flat to dry in shade, away from direct heat. Store folded in a cool, dry place.

New possum merino may shed lightly during the first few wears. This is completely normal and stops quickly. A gentle hand wash helps release any loose surface fibres.
