About Us

Native Possum is a fully Māori-owned possum merino retailer based in Papamoa Beach, Tauranga, a coastal harbour city in Aotearoa New Zealand's Bay of Plenty. We stock and retail luxury knitwear from New Zealand's leading possum merino brands. We're three people who believe in what we're building. While others sell the wool story, we live it — grounded in genuine Māori leadership, values, and a deep connection to place.

Our Whakapapa

As tangata whenua, our connection to this land runs through everything we do — how we choose the brands we stock, curate collections, and build relationships with customers near and far. Native Possum exists because of Māori values, and our whakapapa shapes every decision.

We carry that whakapapa into daily practice. Ancestral wisdom and contemporary commerce sit well together here — and for us, they shape a new kind of indigenous luxury retail, one thoughtful piece at a time.

Kaitiakitanga

Environmental stewardship guides our decisions. We think long-term — about the forests, the waterways, and the species that depend on them. Choosing possum merino is itself an act of conservation: every garment we stock represents possum fur removed from New Zealand's native bush, protecting the birds, insects, and plants that possums threaten.

New Zealand's native species evolved without mammalian predators. Possums, introduced from Australia in the 1800s, devastate native canopy, strip high-protein berries and seeds, and prey on the eggs and chicks of birds like the kōkako, kererū, and kiwi. Using their fur in luxury textiles turns a genuine environmental problem into something worth wearing.

This approach comes from ancestral wisdom, not marketing trends. Respecting the mauri — the life force — of natural materials means working with what the land provides and ensuring nothing is wasted.

A Different Approach

We're a digital-first Māori enterprise that connects discerning customers around the world with Aotearoa's finest possum merino knitwear. No physical stores, no legacy constraints. That frees us to spend our time where it counts — on the products and the people who wear them.

We're particular about what we carry. Every garment is handled, worn, and considered before it earns a place here — and if it doesn't meet our standards for quality, ethics, and cultural integrity, it doesn't make the cut. We'd rather stock a smaller collection we believe in than a bigger one we don't.

Built by Hand

This isn't a template. When we realised an external build couldn't capture what we envisioned — the feeling, the attention to detail, the cultural integrity — we decided to do it ourselves. No agency, no team of developers. Just us, a laptop, and a lot of late nights.

We taught ourselves what we didn't know and figured out the rest along the way. Every product description was written by hand, every page refined over dozens of iterations. The same care we expect from the knitwear, we put into the site that carries it.

We also built accessibility into the foundation, not as an afterthought. We're working toward international accessibility standards across every page, because luxury should be available to everyone. That's not common in this industry, and we're doing it because it matters.

The Makers We Stock

We work exclusively with Aotearoa's finest makers — people we've met, whose factories we've walked through, and whose work we trust. We stock their knitwear as an independent retailer, and every relationship reflects that genuine connection rather than an arm's-length supplier arrangement.

Our Vision

Native Possum represents authentic indigenous luxury built on Māori principles. We want to show that Māori business belongs in international luxury markets — and that traditional values and modern commerce aren't at odds. They make each other stronger.

For now, we're focused on the work. But as the business grows, we look forward to sharing more of our story.
